Examine the rear upper shock mounts located in the wheel wells or trunk area. Check for signs of rubber degradation, cracking, or separation from the metal housing. If the shock shaft shows movement within the mount when the suspension is loaded or unloaded, the mount has failed and is the source of the clunking noise.
