To confirm a vacuum leak, inspect the rubber intake manifolds (boots) located between the carburetor/throttle body and the cylinder head. Look for visible cracks, dry rot, or tears in the rubber. Spray a small amount of starting fluid near the intake joints while the engine is idling; if the engine RPM changes, air is being pulled into the system incorrectly.
