The accelerator pedal position sensor sends signals to the ECU to determine throttle demand. Failure is confirmed by using an OBD-II diagnostic tool to monitor the 'live data' stream of the pedal position sensor; if the voltage output does not change smoothly or remains stagnant while the pedal is depressed, the sensor is confirmed to be faulty.
