In the 1.0L 3-cylinder engine, the ignition system is a frequent source of EPC light activation. Because these engines rely on precise combustion timing, a failure in an ignition coil or the degradation of spark plugs will cause an immediate engine misfire. When the Engine Control Unit (ECU) detects a misfire, it triggers the EPC light and forces the vehicle into limp mode to prevent unburnt fuel from damaging the catalytic converter.
Diagnostic indicators often include stored OBD-II codes ranging from P0300 (random/multiple cylinder misfire) to P0301, P0302, or P0303, which pinpoint the specific cylinder experiencing the fault. A flashing EPC light is a critical indicator of an active, severe misfire that requires immediate engine shutdown to avoid permanent internal damage.
