If the blade depth is set too deep, the teeth strike the wood at an aggressive, nearly vertical angle. To diagnose this, measure the distance between the bottom of the saw's shoe and the lowest tip of the blade teeth. If the blade extends more than 1/4 inch (6mm) past the bottom surface of the wood, the angle of attack is likely too steep, causing the teeth to forcefully impact and break the fibers rather than slicing them.
