A/C Intermittent Operation Due to Faulty Internal Pressure Control Solenoid (N280)

In the variable-displacement compressors used in the VW Passat B5.5, the N280 solenoid valve is responsible for regulating the compressor's internal pressure and stroke. When this solenoid fails or becomes sluggish, it cannot correctly adjust the compressor displacement as engine RPM increases. Even if the electric clutch is confirmed to be engaging and holding properly, the compressor may fail to maintain the required pressure balance, causing the system to trigger a safety cutout to prevent internal damage. Diagnostic verification involves using a scan tool to monitor the 'A/C Compressor Current' and 'Refrigerant Pressure' in live data; if the current to the N280 valve is present but the pressure fails to regulate or spikes abnormally at higher RPMs, the solenoid is likely the point of failure.
