Internal faults include shorted windings, core lamination damage, or degraded insulating oil. These are confirmed by performing a Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) to detect specific chemical signatures of arcing or insulation breakdown, or by conducting a winding resistance and no-load loss test to identify elevated exciting currents indicating internal short circuits.
