To determine if a dead or discharged battery is the cause of starting failure, observe the dashboard lights when the ignition is turned. If the lights are dim or flicker, and the engine produces a rapid clicking sound, use a multimeter to measure the battery voltage. A reading below 12.2 volts indicates the battery is insufficiently charged to engage the starter motor.
