Inspect the base of the tail and the surrounding skin for signs of parasites such as fleas or mites. Look for redness, hair loss, scabbing, or matted fur. Check for evidence of flea dirt (small black specks) in the coat, which may indicate an allergic reaction causing the cat to bite at the area for relief.
