If the hub bearings are improperly adjusted or have developed significant play, the internal armature (the rotating component containing the magnets) may shift off-center. This physical displacement can cause the armature to rub against the stator coils, wearing down the protective insulation on the coil windings. Once the insulation is compromised, the metal-to-metal contact creates an internal short-circuit, preventing the generator from producing the necessary voltage for the lighting system.
