If a dog presents with anemia and weight loss consistent with IMHA, and has a history of tick exposure or resides in an area endemic for ticks, Babesiosis should be considered as a potential trigger for the IMHA. Babesiosis is a parasitic infection of red blood cells transmitted by ticks. The immune system's response to the Babesia parasite can sometimes lead to the destruction of the dog's own red blood cells, resulting in secondary IMHA. Diagnosis involves blood smear examination for Babesia parasites and/or PCR testing. Additional signs may include fever, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), and dark urine.
