Tools and Materials Needed: Vehicle lift, transmission jack, engine support fixture, new OEM rear main seal, crankshaft seal installation tool, torque wrench, and appropriate hand tools.
Safety Precautions: Ensure the vehicle is securely supported on a professional-grade automotive lift. Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning work. Wear appropriate eye protection and gloves to protect against oil exposure.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Use an engine support fixture to secure the engine block from above.
- Raise the vehicle and remove the transmission assembly to expose the rear of the engine crankshaft.
- Remove the drive plate (flexplate) to gain clear access to the rear main seal housing.
- Carefully extract the old, hardened or damaged seal using a seal puller, ensuring no damage occurs to the crankshaft surface or the seal bore.
- Clean the seal seat thoroughly and apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the new seal's inner lip.
- Using the manufacturer-recommended crankshaft seal installation tool, press the new seal into position until it is flush and properly seated.
- Reinstall the drive plate, torquing all bolts to the specific factory-recommended settings.
- Reinstall the transmission assembly and reconnect all electrical and mechanical linkages.
Verification: Refill engine oil to the correct level, start the engine, and allow it to reach operating temperature. Observe the transmission bell housing area for any signs of fresh oil seepage to confirm the seal is successfully containing the fluid.
