Replace the Volvo XC90 D5 Rear Main Crankshaft Seal

THIS is WHY Your Car Is Losing Oil (And How to Fix It)

Tools Required: Engine support fixture, transmission jack, socket set, rear main seal installation tool, new OEM seal, and anaerobic sealant.

  1. Disconnect the battery and safely raise the vehicle.
  2. Remove the transmission and the flywheel to expose the rear main seal housing.
  3. Carefully extract the old seal, ensuring no scratches are made to the crankshaft surface.
  4. Clean the mounting surface with brake cleaner.
  5. Apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to the new seal's inner lip and install using the specialized installation tool to ensure it seats perfectly square.
  6. Reinstall the flywheel (using new bolts) and the transmission.
  7. Perform a test drive and inspect the engine-transmission interface for any further oil seepage.
