If the oil system and mechanical timing have been verified, a faulty camshaft position sensor may be providing erratic data to the ECM, triggering a false P0021 code.
- Locate the Bank 2 intake camshaft position sensor, which is mounted on the rear of the passenger-side cylinder head.
- Disconnect the electrical harness connector and remove the single retaining bolt.
- Carefully pull the sensor out of the cylinder head and inspect the magnetic tip for excessive metallic debris or physical damage.
- Install a new OEM-specification camshaft position sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's torque specification.
- Reconnect the electrical harness, clear the P0021 diagnostic trouble code using an OBD2 scan tool, and perform a road test to confirm the system is operating within parameters.
