Follow these steps to alleviate lower back pain caused by muscle strain:
- Rest: Avoid activities that aggravate the pain. Limit strenuous activities for the first few days.
- Ice: Apply ice packs to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time, several times a day, during the first 48-72 hours to reduce inflammation.
- Heat: After the initial 48-72 hours, apply heat packs or take warm baths to relax muscles.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers: Take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) to reduce pain and inflammation. Follow the package instructions.
- Stretching: Gently stretch your lower back muscles. Examples include knee-to-chest stretches and pelvic tilts. Stop if you feel any sharp pain.
- Strengthening Exercises: Once the pain subsides, begin strengthening exercises to support your back. Consult a physical therapist for guidance.
- Maintain Good Posture: Practice good posture while sitting and standing to prevent further strain.
Safety Note: If your pain is severe, does not improve after a few weeks of self-care, or is accompanied by neurological symptoms (numbness, tingling, weakness), seek medical attention immediately.
