If the currently fitted aftermarket wheels do not contain tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors, a straightforward solution is to replace them with a set of wheels that come pre-equipped with compatible TPMS sensors.
Tools and Materials:
- Vehicle jack
- Jack stands
- Lug wrench
- Torque wrench
- Wheel chocks
- New wheel set with pre-installed and compatible TPMS sensors
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Park the vehicle on a flat, stable surface and engage the parking brake.
- Place wheel chocks around the wheels that will remain on the ground to prevent unintended movement.
- Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels to be replaced while they are still on the ground.
- Safely lift the vehicle using the jack and place it securely on jack stands.
- Completely remove the lug nuts and carefully take off the current aftermarket wheels (without sensors).
- Mount the new wheel set (which includes pre-installed TPMS sensors) onto the wheel studs.
- Hand-tighten the lug nuts.
- Lower the vehicle until the tires just touch the ground, then tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to the manufacturer's specified torque using a torque wrench.
- Lower the vehicle completely and remove the jack stands and jack.
Safety Precautions:
- Always use jack stands to support the vehicle; never rely solely on a jack.
- Ensure all lug nuts are torqued correctly to prevent the wheel from detaching during operation.
- Never work under a vehicle that is not properly supported.
Verification:
Drive the vehicle for 10-20 minutes at speeds above 15-20 mph. The TPMS warning light should extinguish as the vehicle's system recognizes the new sensor IDs and confirms appropriate tire pressures. If the light remains on, a manual TPMS relearn procedure or sensor programming might be necessary.
