Safety Precautions: Ensure the engine is cool, the ignition is off, and the key is removed from the ignition. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shorting.
Tools Required: OBD-II scanner, throttle body cleaner (sensor-safe), a set of Torx/hex drivers, a clean microfiber cloth, and a new throttle body gasket if performing a replacement.
Steps:
- Remove the air intake hose assembly connected to the throttle body by loosening the retaining clamps.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the throttle body housing.
- Unbolt the throttle body from the intake manifold using the appropriate Torx or hex driver.
- If cleaning: Spray the throttle body cleaner onto a microfiber cloth and gently wipe away carbon deposits from the throttle plate and the inner bore. Do not spray cleaner directly into the electronic housing or force the throttle plate open manually, as this may damage the internal gears.
- If replacing: Remove the old unit, clean the mounting surface on the intake manifold, install the new gasket, and bolt the new throttle body into place.
- Reconnect the electrical connector and reinstall the air intake hose assembly.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal.
- Use an OBD-II diagnostic tool to perform a 'Throttle Body Alignment' (TBA) procedure to recalibrate the ECU to the cleaned or new component.
- Clear all stored diagnostic trouble codes (P0121, P0122, or P0221) and start the engine to verify that the EPC light has extinguished and the engine returns to normal idle and power output.
