Replace the Timing Belt, Tensioner, and Idler

Safety Precautions: Disconnect the negative battery terminal before beginning. Ensure the engine is cool to the touch. Use jack stands if working under the vehicle.

Required Tools/Materials: New timing belt, new tensioner pulley, new idler pulley, socket set, torque wrench, and a harmonic balancer puller.

  1. Remove the radiator fan, fan shroud, and upper/lower timing belt covers to expose the old belt assembly.
  2. Rotate the crankshaft manually to align the camshaft and crankshaft timing marks to Top Dead Center (TDC).
  3. Loosen the tensioner nut, remove the old timing belt, and inspect the pulleys for wear.
  4. Remove and replace the tensioner pulley and idler pulley with new components.
  5. Install the new timing belt, ensuring the teeth are seated correctly on the crankshaft sprocket, camshaft sprocket, and around the new pulleys.
  6. Adjust the tensioner according to manufacturer specifications to remove slack from the belt.
  7. Rotate the engine manually by hand for two full revolutions to verify that timing marks remain aligned and no internal interference occurs.
  8. Reinstall the timing covers, fan, and shroud, then reconnect the battery.
  9. Start the engine and verify smooth operation and proper idle to confirm the repair is successful.
