Safety Precautions: Ensure the vehicle is in neutral with the parking brake engaged. Work in a well-ventilated area away from open flames or ignition sources due to fuel vapor presence.
Required Tools: Fuse puller or needle-nose pliers (if using fuse method), spark plug socket and ratchet (if removing plugs).
Steps:
- Disable Fuel Supply: Locate the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box and remove it to cut power to the fuel pump. Alternatively, disconnect the fuel pump harness connector.
- Clear Combustion Chambers: Crank the engine for 5–10 seconds. This allows the starter motor to cycle the pistons without injecting more fuel, effectively clearing the excess liquid from the cylinders.
- Inspect and Service Plugs: If the engine still struggles, remove the spark plugs. If they are wet or fouled, clean them with a wire brush or replace them with a new set to ensure a clean spark.
- Restore Fuel System: Reinstall the fuel pump fuse or reconnect the fuel pump harness.
- Restart Engine: Attempt to start the engine normally. If the engine fires, allow it to run for several minutes to burn off any remaining residue.
Verification: The engine should start consistently without a heavy smell of raw fuel from the exhaust, indicating the cylinders have been cleared and the air-fuel mixture has normalized.
