Lower Back Pain Due to Lumbar Bulging Disc

A bulging disc occurs when the tough, fibrous outer layer of a spinal disc weakens, causing the disc to extend or 'bulge' beyond its normal boundary

in the lumbar spine. Unlike a herniated disc, the outer layer remains intact.

Primary Causes: The most common cause is degenerative disc disease associated with natural aging, where discs lose water content and flexibility. Chronic mechanical stress, including poor posture, repetitive heavy lifting, and obesity, can also accelerate disc wear.

Symptoms: Many bulging discs are asymptomatic. When symptoms occur, they often result from the bulge compressing a nearby nerve, leading to localized lower back pain, sciatica (radiating pain into the leg), numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness.

Diagnostic Evaluation: Diagnosis requires professional medical assessment. A doctor may perform a physical exam, such as the straight leg raise test, to check for nerve irritation. Imaging is the definitive diagnostic tool: an MRI is the gold standard for visualizing soft tissues and nerve compression, while X-rays and CT scans are used to rule out fractures or other structural abnormalities.
