This condition occurs when natural, age-related wear and tear cause the spinal discs to lose water content and structural height. As the disc dehydrates and shrinks, the outer annulus fibrosus may lose its tension and bulge outward beyond the normal vertebral margins. This structural change alters the biomechanics of the spinal segment, leading to localized lower back pain as the surrounding ligaments and vertebral joints compensate for the loss of disc height, even in cases where there is no direct nerve root compression.
