In some instances, the 188 error is caused by a corruption of the internal firmware governing the power bank's logic board. If the controller's bootloader or operating instructions become corrupted due to an interrupted update process, a sudden power loss during a critical operation, or a memory bit-flip, the device may fail to initialize its standard power management sequence. In this state, the controller enters a fail-safe or 'test' mode, which triggers all segments of the LED display to illuminate simultaneously, resulting in the persistent 188 display.
