Even if the distributor housing is correctly indexed to Top Dead Center (TDC), the engine will fail to idle or rev if the spark plug wires are not connected in the correct firing sequence. The Alfa Romeo Nord engine requires a firing order of 1-3-4-2, arranged in a clockwise direction around the distributor cap. If the wires are crossed or installed in the incorrect sequence, the spark will be delivered to the cylinders at the wrong time relative to the intake and compression strokes, leading to severe misfiring, backfiring through the carburetors, and a complete inability to maintain engine speed.
