- Incorrect Distributor Indexing: The distributor shaft may be seated one tooth off, causing the rotor to point away from the #1 spark plug terminal when the piston is at TDC.
- Static Timing Errors: The distributor base was not aligned to the manufacturer-specified static timing (typically 2°–4° BTDC), resulting in retarded or advanced ignition that prevents stable idling.
- Firing Order Mismatch: The spark plug wires were reconnected in the incorrect sequence; the correct firing order for the 2000 series engine is 1-3-4-2.
- Mechanical Advance Failure: Internal centrifugal weights or springs within the distributor are seized, preventing the timing from advancing correctly as engine RPM increases, leading to a refusal to take revs.
Verification requires confirming the #1 cylinder is at TDC, ensuring the rotor aligns with the #1 terminal, and using a timing light to check the ignition advance while the engine is running.
