Even when the distributor is physically indexed correctly to the #1 cylinder, the engine will fail to idle or rev if the static timing is not precisely calibrated to the 'F' (Static Timing) mark on the front crankshaft pulley. If the distributor body is locked down while the points or electronic trigger are not set to fire exactly at this mark, the ignition event will occur too early or too late, preventing the engine from maintaining a stable idle or advancing correctly under load.
This condition often occurs if the points gap (dwell) is set incorrectly, as the points gap directly influences the timing of the spark. If the points are worn or improperly gapped, the ignition timing will drift, making it impossible to achieve a smooth running state even if the distributor housing is rotated to its limit.
