Inspect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve for signs of mechanical sticking or excessive carbon buildup. Use a diagnostic tool to command the EGR valve to open and close while the engine is at idle; failure to respond accurately or a lack of engine speed change during the actuation test indicates a faulty valve. Ensure there are no vacuum or electrical signal anomalies originating from the EGR control circuit.
