To identify if sprocket play is normal or abnormal, perform a physical inspection: with the motorcycle in gear, attempt to rotate the rear sprocket by hand. A small degree of rotational movement is expected due to the cush drive design. Conversely, apply force perpendicular to the sprocket face to check for side-to-side wobble or mechanical clunking. Any lateral movement or audible metallic clunking indicates a mechanical failure rather than standard driveline slack.
