The most common cause of abnormal sprocket play is the degradation of the rubber cush drive dampers located within the rear hub. To confirm this, remove the rear wheel and pull the sprocket carrier away from the hub. Inspect the rubber blocks for signs of hardening, compression, or crumbling. If the dampers no longer provide a snug, interference fit between the carrier 'fingers' and the wheel hub 'ears', they have reached the end of their service life and are the source of the excessive play.
