Tools and Materials: Shielded, twisted-pair cabling; wire strippers; soldering iron or JST-PH crimp tool; heat shrink tubing; grounding wire.
Safety Precautions: Ensure the VESC is fully disconnected from the battery power source before modifying wiring to prevent accidental shorts.
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Replace existing unshielded encoder wiring with high-quality, shielded, twisted-pair cabling to provide a Faraday cage against motor phase EMI.
- Physically reroute the new encoder cable away from the motor phase wires. Ensure the path remains as short as possible to minimize the antenna effect.
- Connect the cable shield drain wire to the VESC's ground (GND) pin on the sensor port. Note: Connect the shield at the VESC side only to prevent the creation of a ground loop.
- Use heat shrink tubing to seal all exposed connections at the encoder breakout board to prevent shorts.
- Reconnect the motor phase wires and power on the VESC.
Verification: Open VESC Tool, navigate to the Motor Detection wizard, and run the encoder detection test. The test should now complete successfully without oscillation or triggering the FAULT_CODE_ENCODER_SPI error.
