Replace the Alternator Voltage Regulator

Tools Required: 7mm socket or screwdriver, replacement VW T4 AAB voltage regulator unit, wire brush, contact cleaner.

Safety Precautions: Disconnect the negative terminal of the starter battery to prevent short circuits. Ensure the engine is completely cool before accessing the rear of the alternator.

  1. Locate the voltage regulator unit on the back of the alternator; it is typically secured by two small screws.
  2. Remove the screws and carefully pull the regulator assembly straight out of the alternator housing.
  3. Inspect the brushes on the old regulator for uneven wear, pitting, or reduced length compared to the new unit.
  4. Clean the internal slip ring contact surfaces inside the alternator with contact cleaner and a lint-free cloth to ensure the new brushes make clean contact.
  5. Insert the new voltage regulator unit into the housing, ensuring the brushes are not snagged, and secure it with the two screws.
  6. Reconnect the battery negative terminal.
  7. Start the engine and use a multimeter to verify that the voltage at the alternator B+ terminal stabilizes between 13.5V and 14.7V under load, confirming the charging fluctuation is resolved.
