Clean or Replace Contaminated Rubber Contact Strips

Safety Precautions: Unplug the piano from the power outlet before disassembly. Avoid touching the internal mainboard circuitry to prevent static discharge damage. Do not use harsh solvents or excessive moisture.

Tools Required: Screwdriver set, Q-tips, electronics-safe contact cleaner (mild), replacement rubber contact strips (if damage is present).

Steps:

1. Carefully disassemble the keyboard cabinet to expose the keybed assembly, ensuring all ribbon cables are handled with caution.
2. Locate the rubber contact strips situated on the circuit board beneath the affected keys.
3. Using a Q-tip lightly dampened with an electronics-safe cleaning solution, gently clean the conductive carbon contacts on the rubber strip and the corresponding sensor pads on the PCB to remove dust, hair, and debris.
4. If the conductive coating is worn or the rubber is degraded, remove the existing strip and install a genuine Kawai replacement contact strip, ensuring it is properly aligned with the sensor pads.
5. Reassemble the cabinet, reconnect all cables, and secure the screws.

Verification: Power on the piano and play the affected keys at varying velocities. The keys should now trigger the correct dynamic touch response rather than defaulting to full volume.
