Re-index the Rohloff Hub and Adjust Cable Tension

Tools Required: None (manual adjustment), or a small wrench for the cable adjusters if necessary.

Steps:

  1. Loosen the thumb screw on the external gear mechanism (EX Box) and remove it from the rear wheel.
  2. Rotate the twist shifter on the handlebar to the #14 position.
  3. Rotate the shifting shaft on the hub fully counter-clockwise until it hits its physical stop.
  4. Reattach the EX Box to the hub and tighten the knurled mounting knob securely.
  5. Locate the cable adjusters on the EX Box or the cable guide. Turn them to adjust the tension until there is exactly 5mm of rotational play in the twist shifter when a gear is engaged.

Safety Precautions: Ensure the bike is stable in a repair stand. Do not use pliers on the plastic cable adjusters to avoid cracking them.

Verification: Shift through all 14 gears. The shifter should engage each gear crisply without a 'mushy' feel, and the shifter should exhibit approximately 5mm of free play in each gear position.
