Test the Compressor Motor Windings for Continuity

Before replacing the entire compressor, verify if the internal motor windings are intact:

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from the power source to ensure safety.
  2. Locate the compressor at the back of the unit and remove the protective terminal cover.
  3. Disconnect the start relay and overload protector from the three compressor pins.
  4. Set your multimeter to the Ohms (Ω) setting.
  5. Measure the resistance between each pair of pins (Start-Common, Run-Common, and Start-Run).
  6. Compare your readings to the manufacturer's specifications; if any reading shows infinite resistance or a short to the compressor housing (ground), the motor windings are damaged and the compressor unit must be replaced.
