Osteoarthritis causes restricted movement through the development of bone spurs (osteophytes) and the gradual erosion of articular cartilage. To diagnose, a clinician evaluates the gradual onset of stiffness and utilizes X-ray imaging to visualize joint space narrowing and the presence of bony outgrowths that mechanically limit the joint's range of motion.
