The evaporator and fan are usually located in a compartment in the inside of the refrigerator. To determine if the evaporator fan is obstructed or malfunctioning, open the inner compartment that houses the evaporator and fan and listen for the noise. If the sound becomes louder when the freezer door is opened, or if it persists even when the refrigerator compressor is off, the issue likely lies with the evaporator fan assembly.
